The Display Team + Thumpermonkey + The Dodo Appreciation Society + Bat Flattery

4 November, 2023 @ 19:00-23:00 GMT

Socks On are back at their favourite venue in town…

This is one of our biggest gigs to date with the incredible The Display Team and Thumpermonkey heading over to be supported by local favourites and Socks On very own The Dodo Appreciation Society. Opening up for us for their first Socks On gig are the awesome Bat Flattery from Lincoln.

Saturday 4th November.
Doors 7pm.
Tickets £10 in advance and maybe a touch more on the door.

THE DISPLAY TEAM

The Display Team’s recordings have been played on BBC Radio 6 Music by Tom Robinson along with Phoenix FM and Kooba Radio. With other bands their contribution to the CD compilation Un-Scene 4 was noted by Rock Sound music magazine as deserving of “an honourable mention.”

The group has toured the UK and throughout Europe and has appeared on the BBC introducing stage at Rhythms of The World festival, Wasted Festival and Big Rivers Festival in the Czech Republic alongside bands such as Mad Caddies. Under their previous moniker Mumrah they played Uxfest in 2004 and 2006.

The Display Team’s music has been influenced by a wide range of pilferable sources, including Frank Zappa, Cardiacs, Mr. Bungle, Queen and a selection of punk and ska bands too numerous (and sometimes obscure) to single out by name. The band themselves also cite Mad Caddies, Madness, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, The Specials and The Beach Boys.

THUMPERMONKEY

Thumpermonkey live, and argue, in London.

Michael, (guitar / vox), wants all the songs to sound like a Philip K. Dick novel performed as musical theatre by Scott Walker, but forgets that detuned metal riffs aren’t always the correct medium.

Rael, (keys / guitar), works with music in the film industry, and therefore tries to replace all of Michael’s riffs with Ginastera; he doesn’t always win.

Ben (drums) tells them that they are both wrong, and starts arguments about which of ‘prog’ or ‘art-rock’ are less odious words describing genres that Thumpermonkey don’t fit in to.

Sam plays bass a bit too well, likes Rush, Decapitated, and funked-up versions of ‘One Night In Tunisia’, as well as the fact that Thumpermonkey ‘do beauty as well as riffs’. He can’t see what all the arguing is about.

This ‘creative process’ somehow produces music that is heavy, delicate, classically and dramatically influenced, sardonic rather than comical, (though some might disagree), and divisive.

THE DODO APPRECIATION SOCIETY

They describe themselves as ” a 2 piece “comedy rock” band based in Northampton – with a love for odd time signatures and silly immature lyrics”….we call them Avantgarde alt rock at its finest with mind curling riffs, pounding drums and genius lyrics. Make your own minds up…

BAT FLATTERY

Melodic Noise Rock from Lincoln.
